…a small frog in a big world…

Traveling Sylvanian 3 – Part 1, The Arrival August 25, 2014

“Somewhere over these hills should be Sycamore Springs.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“There! There’s the town! Just through these woods!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“Thank goodness I’ve arrived. What a long journey! Well…since I’m here, I guess I better deliver this package straight away. I don’t want to be rude and forget it! …. So this is Miss Bibbit’s house? Seems very humble for a ‘celebrity’. I do hope she will be nice.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“Hello. May I help you…miss?”
“Oh! Damara…Damara De Wildt.”
“How wonderful! The whole village has been expecting you! Please come in!”

The whole village?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“Rooibosch Hill sounds wonderful. I apologize for the chill, our summer has been very peculiar with temperature this year.”
“It’s not too cold, though I am thankful for my husband insisting upon binging my jacket!”
“He sounds like a sweet man.”
“Oh, very sweet….Listen to me chat away! I have a package for you!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“A package?”
“Yes, from Ms. Madeline’s boutique! She said there was some delay or mix up with the last order.”
“You have to forgive me…I haven’t the froggiest idea what it could be…”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

*gasp*
“Miss Bibbit…it’s beautiful!”
“Now I remember! I helped our resident thread makers and dyers, the Sweetbriars, connect with Ms. Merryweather a few months ago. They make so much thread and dye, Ms. Clearwater can’t keep up with her dressmaking! Madeline wanted to send me something in thanks, but I never imagined this!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“You must be famished, Damara! Would you like to go to the cafe’? It’s not very big, but their sandwiches are fantastic!”
“Now that you mention it, I could use a spot of food.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“This is a great place, Miss Bibbit. Thank you for inviting me!”
“Please, call me ‘Hyla’. Miss Bibbit makes me sound old.”
*giggles*

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“So Damara, tell me what do you want to do in Sycamore Springs?”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“Oh, well…I’ve always wanted to travel the world and meet new critters.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“I work in Rooibosch Hill as a herbalist, so I suppose I would like to learn about new recipes and plants. The excitement of it all! Me! In a new town! On a different continent! Hemisphere, even! Oh, I want to see everything I can!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“Well, you’re in luck! One of Sycamore Springs’ newest residents is Phineas Underwood. He’s a study of everything in the woods! Plants, rocks, bugs…just name it…
…and double our luck! Here he comes now!…
…Phineas! May we speak with you a moment?”
“Hmm? Oh, ah, yes! I’ll just…be right over.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“Finn, this is Damara De Wildt. She’s from Rooibosch Hill in South Africa and she’s visiting for a few weeks. We were hoping you might be able to show her some interesting places you’ve found.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“Oh, well, I would lo—……..ahhhhh….”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

She..she’s beautiful!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“Um, ah..yes! Of course! I am heading out in a few days to hunt for some fossils. Would you…ah…like to join me?”
“I’ve never been fossil hunting! It sounds so exciting. I promise I won’t be a bother!”
“Nonsense! You won’t be a trifle at all. Um..w-where might I find you?”
“Oh dear. I haven’t found a place to stay just yet, I’m ashamed to say.”
“Finn, why don’t you take her to the Inn where you’re staying?”
“Oh, of course! I’ll…I’ll…help you with your things.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“Mr. and Mrs. Slydale, this is Damara De Wildt. She needs a room for her stay in the village.”
“Welcome to the Foxglove Inn, Ms. De Wildt. We have a room that would be perfect for your stay!”
“Please, don’t make it a lavish one! I would hate to put you out with all of the trouble of last minute!”
“Mr. Slydale and I may not have the fanciest of inns, but our rooms are full of comfort, cleanliness and courtesy! They’re always made ready for guests; you needn’t worry!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“I hope this is to your liking, Miss Damara.”
“Oh, it’s lovely. With such a great view of the forest!”
“I..ah…m-my room is just down the hall. Don’t hesitate to ask.”
“Thank you Phineas, you’ve been most kind.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Oh, Finn…just what have you gotten yourself into?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Oh Rowan, if you could see me now! I miss you something awful…but I have to do this. I just wish you and the cubs could be with me. What a grand adventure this will be…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As she slowly drifts off to sleep, Damara can almost hear her husband whisper, ‘good night, Kitten’….

Mrs. Moppet June 29, 2014

-For Nick-

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“Good morning, Miss Bibbit!”
“Good morning, Durwood!”
“Got some mail for you. No packages today!”
“That’s alright, I wasn’t expecting any today. Thank you!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“I love my job!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“Hmm…fan letter, junk mail, pen pal….”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“Who the heck is ‘Mrs. Moppet’?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“I bet Durwood Chestnut mixed up the mail again! Silly postman!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“Hello, Miss Bibbit! What brings you here?”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“Hello Pansy! I found this letter with mine, but it doesn’t belong to me.”
“Oh dear, that is a conundrum!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“Well, Durwood is still on his rounds and I have a new batch to record and sort….”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“I suppose I could deliver it myself. It’s a nice day for a walk anyways. I’m curious about this ‘Mrs. Moppet’, too!”
“You’re a gem, Hyla! I’ll have one of the children send over something tonight as an apology and ‘thank you’!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“Well, this is the place…”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“Hello, can I help you?”
*GASP*
“Another froggy!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“…and that’s how I came to Sycamore Springs.”
“Wow! it must be exciting to have a sea captain for a husband!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“Oh, very! We’ve been to so many places! But it does get lonely when he’s out to sea.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Moppet, that’s what friends are for!”

Behind the Scenes:
One weekend my friend Nick was staying with us and noticed a Sylvanian City magnet on our fridge. While he knew vaguely about Miss Bibbit, he still wasn’t too hip on what/who she was. He pointed to it and asked my boyfriend and our roommate, “Is that that Mrs. Moppet thing?”. The story was eventually relayed to me and this tale popped into my head.

This is for you, Nick.

MidWinter’s Eve 2013 March 21, 2014

The furry forest folk of Sycamore Springs have a winter holiday unlike any other.

When the woods are blanketed in white and the wind send shivers up the furriest Sylvanian’s back and the air is so cold their breath turns to mist, the villagers of Sycamore Spring take to the streets to celebrate MidWinter’s Eve.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

MidWinter’s Eve takes place on the longest night of the year; the eve of the Winter Solstice. Critters bundle up and head outdoors at sundown to celebrate the warmth of friendship during the coldest times. Candles and lanterns dot the landscape to light the forest in honor of friends past, friends present and friends not yet made.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

They bring greenery into their homes to remind them of the spring and summer ahead. Some folk consider it good luck for a wonderful bounty on the farms for the upcoming season.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

In the early days of Sycamore Springs, gifts were traditionally given to those who need it most; those who just arrived or who were sick. Nowadays, gifts of all kinds are presented to friends and family, though no one goes in want. Blankets, foodstuffs and other warm trimmings are popular presents.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Children go begging from door to door for treat. Some adults make them sing or dance or otherwise “play” for the prizes. Treats can be exchanged for new ones between friends or at the next house and can be anything from marbles to candy, but are typically something small.  The exchanges continue until all of the children receive one gift. They can stop going door to door when they are happy with what they have, but it’s fun to see who is handing out what!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After the presents have been given and the children are finished running from door to door, the entire village gathers for the MidWinter’s Feast. Tables and chairs of all sorts are brought out from the houses and placed in one long line at the center of town. There is always a seat for everyone, even those passing through! Everyone brings as much as they can to share and left-overs are quite appropriate. Everyone shares in the clean up and the joy of each other’s company.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The festivities of MidWinter’s Eve bring warmth and light to a cold and snowy season. Among the eves of the tiny houses and the branches of the trees, the spirit of friendship can prevail over the darkest nights.

Halloween 2013 February 9, 2014

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“It’s Halloween again and I’ve decided to throw a costume party!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“Mr. Moekey and Buck Moss are just arriving.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“Look at all of the tasty treats!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“The drinks are nice and cold and there is plenty of chips and salsa!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“You make a wonderful pirate, Mr. Moekey! Thank you for handing out candy to our trick-or-treaters.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“This has been a great party! Everyone had a good time. So many costumes!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“I hope your Halloween was as spooktacular as mine!”

In a tiny town named Sycamore Springs, a tiny frog lived. She spent her days weaving baskets by the pond in the day …

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

… and reading by candlelight at night. She was very shy and her closest friend was a little bear down the lane.

“Why don’t you take a trip around the world? Meeting new people might help you to not be so shy!”

The tiny frog thought – the world was big and scary! As she sat looking at her pond, she also thought of how beautiful and unique the world was.

For the first time in her life, she decided to take a chance.
